Michael Hutchinson, a.k.a., Hutchy, was born in Jamaica in Barbican, St. Andrews. He grew up in Mandeville, Manchester and moved to Washington, D.C. in 1978, where he became a renowned DJ, Selector, and Promoter on the D.C. music scene. Hutchy says, “Ever since I can remember, I’ve been doing music. One of my first stage experiences was at my high school where I did a rendition of ‘Master Blaster Jamming’ by Stevie Wonder. When I finished my act. I was rewarded with a standing ovation. At that point, I knew that I belonged on the stage.”
“My experience on stage didn’t end there, I did other local performances, and the way audiences reacted was overwhelmingly positive. Reggae and Rock bands would call me to join them on stage and do a solo performance. Whenever I was in the house, the audience would insist that I take the stage. From these experiences, I knew I had a gift to connect with people through music and performance.”
“Early on, in my music career, I had studio experiences with studio engineers that I admired, such as, Scientist and Phillip Smart. I purchased a drum machine and began experimenting with making beats. Though I was never one to go into the studio often, my experiences with various producers have made my musical career what it is today.”
“Because I saw the need to have creative control over my work, I knew I had to have my own studio, which is how Ruff Cut Records was formed. Ruff Cut specializes in originality and experimentation of music. From Ruff Cut one can expect impeccable production on all its recordings.”
“Ruff Cut is not just Reggae. I work in a variety of styles, such as dance music which comes from Dub. In my experience as a performer, I have worked with diverse bands and individual artists, such as, Inner Circle, Thievery Corporation, BT, Deep Dish and others. My singing style is also unique, involving a score of different styles. Ruff Cut: it’s only the beginning of the journey. Stay tuned.”
